Food Pantry Benefits!
LMS is participating in two events to benefit our local food pantry. At last weeks early out we had a volleyball tournament as a fund-raiser. Students paid a dollar to play and a canned food item to watch. Staff members brought baked goods to sell to students throughout the day. Over $150 and several boxes of canned goods will be donated to the food pantry!

On Tuesday, December 1st our basketball teams will be playing East Buchanan at home with games beginning at 4:30. All gate receipts that evening will be donated to the food pantry by Lathrop R-II. Come out and support our teams as well as the food pantry!

Too Many Bags?
We are beginning to have problems with our students bringing bags and back packs to class with them. Our handbook states that they should be left in their lockers. This is so they are not clogging up the aisles in the classroom as well as for student safety. Our classrooms are just not that big and you never know what someone might have in his/her backpack. As of Monday, November 30th, we will not be allowing any bags, purses or backpacks big enough to hold a text book to be brought into the classrooms. These should be left in the student’s locker.

Progress #4
Last Wednesday was the end of our progress period 4. We will send grade cards home with kids on Wednesday, December 2nd.

All doors are locked during the school day and you need to press the silver button to call the office. Once identified, the door will be unlocked for you to enter. We have also installed video cameras that record 24/7 in the hallways, cafeteria, gym and outside the South doors.

Support our Troops
In honor of Veteran’s Day our seminar teams are having a contest this week to see which one can collect the most non-perishable items to send to our troops over seas. They need everyday items such as, batteries, socks, jerky, pop-tarts, gum, toothpaste, snacks, baby-wipes, playing cards, new/used DVD’s and anything else you would want to give. Please send the items to school with your child or contact Mrs. O’Connor.

Weekly News 10/26

We found out last week that our Lathrop R-II School District is Accredited with Distinction in Performance for the third year in a row! This is based totally on school performance data from many areas including MAP Scores, ACT Scores, Attendance and others. With your help, Lathrop R-II is doing a fantastic job!

Parent-Teacher Conferences went very well last Thursday with approximately 67% or our parents attending despite the poor weather and illness. Student performance the first quarter was super! Only 4.7% of grades were D’s of F’s. That is the best percentage ever for first quarter! 83% of grades were A’s and B’s which is awesome! Thanks to all parents for keeping their kids motivated and focused on academic achievement! We really appreciate all of your support!

Just so you know, parents are invited to everything we do. We sometimes forget to invite you, but you can show up at any of our school-wide events. We welcome your input at all times.

We have another assembly scheduled for this week. The Harlem Rockets are in town for a basketball game against some of Lathrop’s staff members Tuesday night at 7:00. They will do a drug-free assembly for us Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in our gym. Parents are welcome to attend!

We only had four dads at our first Watch DOGS meeting. There were two others who had been to the high school training so I excused them from seeing the presentation again. We are anxious to get some Dads Of Great Students into our building. If you couldn’t make it but still would like to participate please contact Mr. Fine at 528-7600 or email me at cfine@lathrop.k12.mo.us.

The Eighth Grade Boys Football team ended up tying with Lawson Tuesday which also means they tied for the Conference Title! Two years in a row for that group, great job boys and coaches Haahr, Gordon and Pritchett!

After a wild and crazy homecoming week, our second full week of school went very well. We sent our second progress reports home withh the kids last week. Most of the kids have been shown their MAP Test results and were given those to take home as well. If you haven't seen the progress report or the MAP results, please call us so we can get them to you.

All of our volleyball and football teams have been experiencing success. The football teams are a combined 5 and 1. Our volleyball teams are a combined 10 and 8. The Seventh Grade Volleyball Team played very well Saturday at the Plattsburg Tournament placing 2nd out of 8 teams. Congrats to all of our teams! All teams have only about two and a half weeks of play remaining and then it's on to basketball season!

We're looking forward to another full week of school this week! The only big thing going on is the sixth grade field trip to the Living History Festival. We are very fortunate to have this type of activity available in Lathrop.

Have a great week!

6th Grade to Living History Festival

Our sixth grade will be going to the Lathrop Living History Festival on Friday, October 9th. We will leave at about 10:30 and return at 1:30. We will be eating lunch there so students will need to bring a lunch, eat a school lunch, or bring money to purchase something up there. Permission slips need to be returned by October 7th.

The students will be placed in groups based upon an interest inventory then asked to plan and implement a community service project. Seventh Grade boys won 2-0, yes 2. Just one lone safety scored in this game. At least it was by us. Our offense will need to improve but....

The 8th graders showed plenty of offense beating Mid-Buc by a score of 48-0 with a running clock the entire 4th quarter.

Great games!

Current News 09/15

The dance Friday night was super! The kids were well-behaved as usual and I think everyone had a great time. The sixth graders seemed to have the most fun of any of the groups!

Monday the 14th we didn’t have school so that the teachers could go to our annual KCI Conference Teacher In-Service. We had a great motivational speaker to start off with then went to different break-out sessions. There were many different sessions for the teachers to choose from, all aimed at improving our instruction. We all learned a lot!

This week we have several “firsts”. Our first pep rally is Wednesday the 16th beginning at about 2:15. Our first football game is Thursday the 17th at home beginning at 5:00 and our first volleyball game is Saturday at West Platte, 9:00 a.m. Should make for another exciting week!

We aren’t trying to be nosy…but our Clinton County Health Department is asking for our help in tracking illness county wide. When a student is absent, we are supposed to inquire about the type of illness. So if you say your child is sick, please don’t be offended or surprised when we try to get a few more specifics. We thank you for your understanding in this situation.

Just a reminder that Parents are more than welcome to attend any of our events. We often forget to make direct invitations, but please feel free to attend pep rallies, assemblies, dances, etc. We love to have you around, and although your kids might not admit it, they do too!

We held Student Council speeches and elections last Friday. The students did an excellent job presenting their speeches in front of the entire student body. Josh Hartzell was voted President, Duke Allen Vice-President, Emily Brunner Secretary, Dakota Stubler Treasurer and Steven Wilson is the Reporter.

Class Representatives were voted on today. I'll put the results in as soon as we release them.

Last Friday was the end of our first progress period. Teachers were supposed to have grades finished today and we are hoping to send them home Wednesday. Be on the lookout for them! You should also be getting a phone call from the teacher if your child has a D or and F. Be prepared to give us some of your thoughts on how to help your child.

Just FYI we have 182 students in grades 6 -8. 72 in 6th, 57 in 7th and 53 in 8th.

A short week this week and no school Monday the 14th means a short week next week too.

Weekly News 08/31

Our first full week went very well. Thanks to everyone for helping us get off to a great start.

We finally received the majority of our student ID cards last week. We made temporary cards for everyone else. Everyone that earned a color sticker in grades 7 – 8 should have one on his/her card now. This means we can get started with our Renaissance Rewards Program. There is more information about this in the handbook.

As a reminder, we do serve breakfast. We haven’t had a very good participation rate so far. Maybe that just means all of you are eating breakfast at home with your kids. That is good too!

We will soon be looking for some “DOGS”. (Dads Of Great Students) This is a program that gets dads into our schools on a regular basis. Please be on the look out for more information.

Last year our average MAP test scores ranked 7.8 out of 13 conference and area schools. This year our average rank was 5th! More good news for LMS!

We moved our dance from last Friday, the 28th to Friday, September 11 because of a home football game conflict.

To keep more up-to-date and informed about LMS please sign-up to be a follower of this web site. You will then get an e-mail every time we update it. The same is true for our homework blog: http://www.lmshomework.blogspot.com/.

Dance Re-Scheduled to 9/11

Due to a conflict with our High School Football's home opener, we are moving our dance to September 11, 2009.

News 8/24

Our first week is going great! Students and Staff are back into a rhythm and all things are running smooth.

One of our goals is to increase our character education program. This would include decreasing the amount of bullying and harassing. We believe that getting our kids working with each other more closely will help improve these things.

To that end, we started our first couple of days with a lot of team building activities based upon our seminar teams. Each group of seminar kids had to come up with a team mascot. We then had a dodgeball tournament with the seminar classes as the teams. The Cobras came all the way back from the loser’s bracket to defeat the Anaconda/Gecco team for the championship. The Fighting Armadillos took the sixth grade championship and third place overall!

Preliminary MAP Test results are in and LMS did fantastic. Six of seven classes improved their scores over last year’s test. We also beat Plattsburg’s scores in six of seven areas. (We have a running bet with them involving a travelling trophy!) All of our scores were better than the state average too. Last year was just a super year all around!!

We are moving our first dance from this Friday the 28th to September 11th. We sure want everyone to come out for the first H.S. Football game on Friday so we don’t want to have a conflict with our dance.

All four of our student restrooms have been renovated and are completely touchless. They look great!

Thanks to all of you for helping us get our new year off to a great start. It is our sincere hope to work closely with you to make this year even better than last year for all of our kids!

Registration for 2009-2010

Registration for next year will be on Wednesday, August 5th! The letter we sent home in May stated the date would be on Thursday the 6th but we had to move it to the 5th for a couple of reasons.

The 8th grade should come between 8:30 and 10:30, 7th grade from 10:3-12:30 and the 6th grade from 1:30 to 3:00.

We will be taking school pictures that day too, so make sure you dress appropriately!

2009-2010 School Year

I know we just started summer vacation but here at school we've already begun working on and thinking about next year.

Students have already filled out their course requests for next year and we are starting to build a schedule to meet as many needs as possible.

Enrollment Day will be Wednesday, August 5th. (This date has changed from the 6th!) 8th grade from 8:30 - 10:30, 7th grade from 10:30 - 12:30 and 6th grade from 1:30 - 3:00.

We will take school pictures, assign lockers and do some health screenings that day as well as get schedules.

We have a sixth grade orientation night set for Thursday, August 17th at 7:00 p.m. (This is a date change!) We hope to be able to answer questions and help our sixth graders get off to a great start.

As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to give us a call!

Grade Cards Mailed

All of the teachers have their grades completed now so we expect we will be mailing them home Friday the 22nd. Several students owe us money or a book so if you don't get a grade card by Tuesday, you should probably call or stop in to see if your child owes us something.

Academic Awards Ceremony

We will be presenting our Academic Awards on Wednesday, May 20th beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center. So far we have printed more awards certificates than ever! Parents are invited to attend. It will probably last until 10:00. This is also the last day of school with an 11:30 dismissal!

Attendance Rewards Field Trip

124 Students that have had 96% or better attendance and fewer than seven tardies will be rewarded with a field trip to the North Kansas City Community Center on Thursday, May 14th.
This is our way of thanking students that have had above average attendance.

The students will be able to swim, play volleyball, basketball, and climb a rock wall. We are leaving at 8:30 and will return before 3:00. Permission slips are required.

2009-2010 Classes and Registration

We have begun meeting with kids to figure out what classes they will be taking next year.

Miss Jones, our counselor, went down to LES and talked with the 5th grade. She got them signed up for lockers and discussed their class options. They really can only choose whether or not to be in band. The rest of their classes are pretty well set.

She also met with 7th graders and discussed their options on Wednesday the 29th. Seventh and eighth graders do have a couple more choices for their classes. The seventh graders were given a course list and asked to put down their preferences. The parents also need to sign-off on this form. We hope there will be some parent-child discussions during this process!

The course request form was supposed to be turned in today! If you haven't seen it, or it's still at home, please ask your child about.

Track Results

The girl's continued their dominant performance in track meets this year taking first place in an eighteen team meet at Trenton on Tuesday the 21st.

The boy's are doing well too, they placed second at the same meet.

Our next meet is Thursday, 4/23 at Orrick. Come watch us run!

MAP Testing Over, EOC Exam Next Week

LMS is finished with our MAP Testing. The students really put a lot of hard work in over the last week. They were great!

The Algebra kids still have one test left, the End of Course Exam that the state is using to replace the MAP at the high school level. The Algebra class is really a high school level class and all high school students must take the Algebra EOC Exam after taking Algebra. Our kids just "get" to take it a year early because they are in an advanced class.

MAP Motivators

We have some testing incentives set up to help motivate our students. Anyone improving any of their test scores will get to attend our MAP achievement party in the fall. Each class whose overall score beats their own last year's class will be invited to the party as well. In addition we have daily attendance drawings for gift certificates to local establishments. And once again we have our travelling trophy contest with Plattsburg Middle School. The winner gets to keep the trophy for the year, and the loser presents it to the winning school at a ball game next fall.

As if those things aren't enough, the teachers keep track of each student's effort and attitude on a daily basis. Students that really seem to be trying hard, have a positive attitude and come prepared will be rewarded with a trip to the movies in May.

The travelling trophy contest was enough motivation for me! :)

Last Day of School!

We always build three extra days of school into the calendar for days we miss for inclement weather. Since we have only cancelled school twice this year, May 2oth will now be the last day of school, not May 21. That means there are now only 23 days of school remaining this year! That is really hard to believe!

Progress Report 8

As you know, we have been sending home progress reports every three weeks this year. We are due to send one around April 28th. We have decided not to report grades at this time. We have done so much MAP preparation and testing for the last couple of weeks that most students grades have not changed much. If you really need to know you can check on your child's grades through the homework portal, or have your child "pink slip" on any Monday and bring it home.

Homework Blog

Did you know we have a blogspot for 7th and 8th grade homework? Check it out at:

MAP Testing

Wow! We just finished two days worth of MAP Testing. The kids were awesome! They behaved perfectly and really seemed to put forth their best effort! We are hopeful that their scores will reflect their effort! Thanks to all the students for their effort, the teachers for their preparation and the parents for their support.

The sixth graders are done with MAP testing. The seventh and eighth graders have two more days, Tuesday and Wednesday 4/21 and 4/22.

Track Meet Changes

Some changes have been made in our track schedule for this spring. We are not attending the Cameron Meet on Tuesday the 7th. We will go to West Platte on Wednesday the 8th. Some schedules showed a meet at Maysville on the 9th, but there is no meet at Maysville. The rest of the schedule is unchanged.

MAP Testing Begins

LMS will begin MAP Testing on April 15th with the 6th, 7th and 8th Graders all taking the state mandated tests. The 6th grade will be testing on the 15th, and 16th. The 7th and 8th graders will test on the 15th, 16th, 21st and 22nd.

We will have two testing sessions each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

We do have some testing incentives set up to help motivate our students. Anyone improving any of their test scores will get to attend our MAP achievement party in the fall. Each class whose overall score beats their own last year's class will be invited to the party as well. In addition we have daily attendance drawings for gift certificates to local establishments. 7th and 8th grade boys and girls track starts on Monday, March 16th. All boys and girls interested need to have a physical before the first day of practice. Mike Epperson will be coaching the girls again this year and Brad Colhour will be the boys coach. If we have enough students participating we plan to add another coach. The first Track meet is April 16 at Trenton.

We encourage all students to get involved in school activities. We know that involved students are better students! Track, more than other sports, allows for a high number of students to participate at each meet.

Study Island March Madness

Students in the 7th and 8th grade are participating in Study Island March Madness. Every student is encouraged to complete his or her Study Island Comm Arts, Math, and Science assessments. There will be contests and prizes awarded throughout the month of March.

The 6th grade is having their own version of March Madness. The top four winners of Math and Communication Arts Blue Ribbons combined from March 2 through March 31, 2009 will share a large pizza at lunch! The race is picking up as the numbers change daily!

Study Island is a web-based activity where students can practice and assess their skills. Students build confidence in their understanding of the Grade Level Expectations that they have been working with this year, and in previous years. Students are encouraged to access Study Island from home, or if a student doesn't have at home access, there will be a teacher available after school until 4:30 every weekday except Friday during the entire month.

Sixth Grade to Exchange City

Each year our sixth grade students go to Exchange City. This year we are going on Friday, 3/6. Students prepare for this field trip for many weeks leading up to the event. Exchange City is an actual simulation of a city where students get to run the entire city and businesses within the city. Students choose professions such as mayor, police officer, bankers, radio dj, food service workers, material distribution, etc. Students get a paycheck and have the opportunity to buy food and souveniers. This is an awesome experience for the kids.

More Students Proficient

All three of our grades recently took another Study Island Benchmark Assessement to help us determine their progress in Reading/Language. We are pleased to report that all three grade levels saw improvement in the percentage of kids scoring proficient or advanced!

The sixth grade went from 47% to 80%, the seventh grade went from 55% to 85% and the eighth grade went from 44% to 64 %. Everything we know leads us to believe these results will be similar to the MAP Results, which makes us very optimistic!

If you have Internet access, your child can log-on to this from home and share his/her results with you!
